Research Professor - Biomedical Engineering

The Active Biomaterials Lab (ABML) is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to fill a Research Professor Position to conduct theoretical studies on the interaction of anisotropic 3D-printed microblocks in a liquid crystalline environment. The primary research focus will be on how the viscoelasticity and anisotropy of liquid crystals affect the self-assembly of self-propelled microblocks energized by ultrasound. The ABML studies fundamental principles controlling the self-organization of biological and synthetic active materials in a complex environment.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates with expertise in the mechanical and optical properties of liquid crystals and liquid crystal elastomers are encouraged to apply. The position will be in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department in the new Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Building at the heart of the Penn State University Park campus. The Penn State BME department and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (http://www.huck.psu.edu) provide a rich environment in which faculty, research professors, postdocs and graduate/undergraduate students regularly interact and conduct collaborative studies. Affiliated faculty, staff and students have access to the Institutes’ state-of-the-art core facilities.

This limited-term position is funded for one year from the date of hire with a possibility of refunding.
