Director of Learning Experience Design in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State is seeking a non-tenure line Associate Research Professor as the Director of Learning Experience Design. The successful candidate will lead research and evaluation so we can understand how to teach students, both internal and external to Penn State, as well as expand the impact of our faculty expertise and generate new revenue streams for Mechanical Engineering and the College of Engineering.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research on how to teach students and broader external customers.

  • Create and promote new avenues of learning.

  • Leverage new technologies and instructional methods to meet a varying audience’s needs.

  • Develop program infrastructure architecture for others to utilize.

  • Create systematic how-to teaching guidelines to be implemented within departments and colleges across the University.

An Associate Research Professor should possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research; must have demonstrated ability as a researcher; and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline. Alternatively, the Associate Research Professor should possess at least a master's degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research; must have demonstrated exceptional ability as a researcher; and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline at a level of distinction beyond that of the Assistant Research Professor. Experience in pedagogy and learning experience is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment, as well as possess great oral and written communication skills.

This is a term appointment, funded for one year from the date of hire, with a possibility of renewal.
