AE 481W & AE 897
AE 481W, the first semester of senior thesis, is very well suited to get the students thinking about their building and familiarize them with the systems and methods that are currently being employed to complete the project. It serves as a good point to start establishing critical contacts that will be utilized throughout the rest of the year, not just with the GC, but with subcontractors as well. Even though I did not have the fortunate opporunity of using a building that I had worked on during an internship, by the end of the first semester, through conversations with project participants, the completion of the tech assignments, and site visits, I felt adequately knowledgable about the construction of Doctors Community Hospital.
AE 897, the MAE section of the second semester of senior thesis, was much less fact finding and employed much more critical thinking and problem solving. We were no longer looking at what was being completed on site, but how we could improve the project. This class helps to reinfoce the necessity of making your own schedule to keep on track so that work does not pile up near the due date, though I was not overly successful in this aspect. The focus of this semester was to analyze the project and analyze ways that could help to improve the project from a "construction point of view" while still also demonstrating knowledge in other discipline areas. I believe the current format of the thesis is a great way to get this depth and breadth. An added benefit of this class is the often required industry interaction. It gets the students use to the concept that when they dont have the information they need and can't find it in the books or on-line, to go talk to the people that know the products best. Overall, this class was a great chance to demonstrate knwledge gained over the past 5 years and refine the skills that make us valuable out in the industry.

The Capstone e-Portfolio served to be very helpful throughout my senior thesis work. At the beginning of AE 481W, it took some additional time to get the website up and running due to a lack of experince with website design, but this was overcome. The website served as a great tool to keep friends and family up to date on my progress, as well as the project team at DCH. I am happy that their will be an electronic record of my work for a few years to come as a reminder of the time spent on the project and as a showcase of my work.
