Gregory Smithmyer

Gregory Smithmyer is currently a 5th year student in the Mechanical option of the Architectural Engineering program at Pennsylvania State University. Greg will graduate with an integrated Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering in December 2009. He has been a member of several on-campus groups and clubs including Engineering House Special Living Option, Student Society of Architectural Engineers, Phi Alpha Epsilon (the AE Honor Society), and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Greg is the treasurer of ASHRAE for the 2008-2009 academic year.

During the past three summers Greg has gained experience in both the design and contracting of building mechanical systems. Greg worked as an intern for H.F. Lenz Company in Johnstown, PA during the summer of 2008. During his time at H.F. Lenz he performed energy modeling for LEED documentation as well as energy modeling for system and life-cycle cost comparisons. Additionally, Greg performed site surveys, laid out and sized ductwork, mechanical piping and mechanical equipment. As an intern at Enginuity, LLC Mechanical Contracting in Harrisburg, PA during the summers of 2006 and 2007, Greg was introduced to and gained experience in building mechanical and plumbing systems. He worked primarily as a project estimator for design-build and design-bid-build projects. From his experience as an estimator, he learned how many different systems work and are designed. In addition to providing estimating services, Greg also worked as a project manager for several projects where he acquired subcontractors, purchased equipment and scheduled workers.

In October 2007, Greg passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and will acquire Engineer in Training status upon his graduation. He looks forward to future employment with an HVAC or AE design firm and working toward licensure as a Professional Engineer.
