Asphalt Field Tech Review & Certification

This Review & Certification Course is designed for technicians directly involved with asphalt pavement construction, testing and inspection. This is a review, not a training course. A working knowledge of basic pavement construction principles and procedures is necessary.

Online Courses (through PSU’s Canvas system) include three (3) non-consecutive days. Day 1 and Day 2 are lectures held online using ZoomTM. Day 3 is an online certification examination that also requires monitoring through Zoom to receive credit for your score. No mobile devices such as iPads or cell phones since they cannot connect to the exam. A desktop or laptop with a webcam will be needed.

REQUIRED: A Penn State User ID (with several letters and numbers) MUST be included ON THIS APPLICATION in the next steps. THE PENN STATE USER ID IS NOT YOUR NECEPT ID#.

1. Please visit https://accounts.psu.edu, select CREATE MY ACCOUNT and enter the required information IF you do not already have a Penn State Account. The process is simple and you should quickly receive an email confirming your Penn State User ID. Keep this information. It will be required to log into Canvas for your online course and exam.

2. NECEPT needs your Penn State User ID (with several letters and numbers) at least 3 weeks prior to the course to provide you access to Canvas for your course manual, materials, and the online exam. You can also log in your MY NECEPT account to add this information to your profile.

In-person courses may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment OR changed to online courses due to future Federal, State or University safety guidelines regarding COVID.

The Field Technician Program Handout Manual will be needed during your course and open book examination. The manual is a series of documents that includes materials from the National Highway Institute Course Participant Manual, the Hot-Mix Asphalt Paving Handbook, and pertinent Pennsylvania Test Methods and PENNDOT Publication 408 Specifications. The Field Technician Program Handout Manual, Course Videos, Practice and Example Problems; and a Practice Quiz will be available in Canvas prior to the course for online courses. For those accepted for online courses, a printed copy of the manual is available to applicants who have been Accepted by an authorized PennDOT/PTC Representative if requested by phone NLT 3 weeks prior to the course.
