IDEAS UNLIMITED

In the final two weeks of class the production quantity of 50 clocks was achieved.  During this time there were many production problems.  The problems that were encountered were tool breaks, defective parts, process plan redesign, and the acrylic not holding dimensional tolerances.

The process plan was restructured so that the PSU logo was machined first then the clock housing and contours.  This was done because the part was being pulled out of the vise by machining the clock housing and contours first.

The spindle speed for our process plan was increased to 15,000 rpm to prevent the 1/32 inch end mill from breaking.  This also prevented acrylic chips from becoming melted to the logo which in return decreased our defective parts.

Once all of these problems were addressed with the exception of the poor dimensional tolerances of acrylic, the production of clocks increased.  Before these problems were corrected 28 clock backgrounds were produced in 23 hours.  After the redesign of the process 22 clock backgrounds  were produced in 6 hours.
