About the Leonhard Center

The Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education, established by an endowment gift from William Leonhard in 1990, is at the heart of the Penn State College of Engineering's educational mission to produce graduates who are "world class engineers." The Leonhard Center's focus is to develop new and better ways to teach engineering by bringing together imaginative, talented, engineering students, faculty, corporate executives, and practicing engineers.

The innovative programs--which have been adopted by other engineering schools across the United States--already established at Penn State include:

  • Integrating creativity and design components, teamwork, and problem-solving into courses throughout the engineering curriculum. For example, the first year design course taken by engineering students now includes team-based design and fabrication assignments, rather than traditional lab experiments.
  • Establishing interactive courses--such as Enigmatic Engines and Product Dissection--to give students vital engineering technology experience in The Learning Factory.
  • Founding of the Engineering Leadership Minor, open to selected students, to cultivate the leadership skills sought by business and industry.
  • Promoting additional programs aimed at strengthening and broadening the traditional engineering curriculum.

The William & Wyllis Leonhard Engineering Scholars Program is a merit-based scholarship program for outstanding students in the College of Engineering. Through the Leonhards' generosity, this program offers students of exceptionally high ability and motivation an opportunity for study, financial support, leadership development, and enhancement activities at one of the nation's premier colleges of engineering. The overall goal of the program is to assist students in becoming World-Class Engineers.
