Asphalt Field Review & Certification Course

NOTE: This is not a training course. It is a review & certification course for experienced technicians directly involved with asphalt pavement construction, testing and inspection. A working knowledge of basic pavement construction principles and procedures is necessary.

Prior to Registering for a Course:

  1. Please Read PennDOT Publication 351 to Review the Requirements.
  2. Check your Current Knowledge: Take this Pre-Course Evaluation Exam. If you score 72% or less, you may want to take a course on the basics of asphalt BEFORE registering.
  3. Obtain a PSU User ID (REQUIRED ON APPLICATION) IF you do not already have one: Visit https://accounts.psu.edu, select CREATE MY ACCOUNT and enter the required information. The process is simple and you should receive an email with your User ID quickly. Keep this information required to log into Canvas later. (A User ID has several letters and numbers.) This is required on all applications.

Online Courses are three (3) non-consecutive days. Day 1 and Day 2 are lectures using Zoom. Day 3 is a certification exam through PSU’s Canvas system that ALSO requires monitoring through Zoom to receive credit for your score. Required: A standard desktop or laptop with a webcam and consistent 3.0 Mbps internet connection must be used for this course. NO mobile devices such as Chromebooks, iPads, tablets, cellphones, droids, etc. since they CANNOT connect properly to the polls and exam.

In-Person Courses are three (3) consecutive days and may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment OR changed to online courses due to future safety guidelines regarding COVID.

Course Resources – Begin Studying: The Field Technician Program Course Manual will be needed during your course and open book exam. Resources including the Manual, Course Videos, Practice and Example Problems; and a Practice Quiz are available on the NECEPT website (subject to change prior to the course). For online courses, the manual and resources will also be available in Canvas approximately 2 weeks prior to the course and a printed copy of the manual is available to applicants who have been accepted by an authorized PennDOT/PTC Representative if requested by phone NLT 3 weeks prior to the course. For in-person courses, a printed copy of the manual cannot be mailed.

Participant must score 75% or better on the exam and fulfill all attendance and polling requirements to pass the course. Certification is valid for approximately five (5) years and will expire April 30 of the appropriate year.

Only one course number can be selected in each order.
