Superpave Volumetric Mix Design Workshop

This workshop is designed for technicians and engineers who understand and are experienced with the basic principles and procedures of asphalt concrete mixture design, testing, and voids analysis calculations. This workshop has been updated to reflect the latest changes in test procedures, specifications, and implementation information. The duration of various sections may vary as needed. This course is only one of several prerequisites for the PennDOT level 2 plant certification.

Applicants must be PennDOT Certified Level 1 Plant Technicians to attend, or the equivalent for out of state participants.

Prior to Registering for a Course:

1. Please Read PennDOT Publication 351 to Review the Requirements.
2. Obtain a PSU User ID (REQUIRED ON APPLICATION) IF you do not already have one: Visit https://accounts.psu.edu, select CREATE MY ACCOUNT and enter the required information. The process is simple and you should receive an email with your User ID quickly. Keep this information required to log into Canvas later if a retest is needed. (A User ID has several letters and numbers.) This is required on all applications.

This in-person course is four (4) consecutive days. Photo identification will be verified. Day 1 is lecture to familiarize participants with the Superpave system. Day 2 and Day 3 are hands-on laboratory testing to evaluate a proposed Superpave mixture design. Day 4 is a written open book certification examination. NOTE: In-person courses may be changed to a hybrid course with online lecture, in-person hands-on laboratory testing, and an online exam OR be cancelled due to future safety guidelines regarding COVID.

Course Manual - A printed copy of the Superpave Workshop Handout Manual will be distributed at this in-person course and cannot be mailed.

Participant must score 75% or better on the exam.

REMEMBER to Submit Your Level 2 Plant Certification Application: Submit the separate certification card application (with the other requirements listed in PennDOT Publication 351) within 3 years of passing the Superpave Volumetric Mix Design Workshop exam.
