UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Jennifer Warner Hayman, a civil engineer with Michael Baker International, Inc., has been selected to receive the 2019 Adele A. Konefal Women’s Young Professional Scholarship. The scholarship will cover Warner Hayman’s conference registration fee, hotel and travel expenses to attend the 25th Annual Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference (TESC), running Dec. 11-13.

“We are pleased to award this scholarship to Jennifer,” said Eric Donnell, director of the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute (LTI) and general co-chair of TESC. “Each year, we receive a large number of applications for this scholarship. Jennifer’s application included a great combination of experience and plans for professional development. We look forward to her participation in the conference.”

While attending TESC, Warner Hayman will be able to choose to attend sessions from five key tracks: safety, operations, planning, design and technology. Topics will include a wide range of transportation subjects, with considerable depth in each session. Concurrent sessions, certification training and a transportation technology exhibition are also planned.

“In a technical field like traffic/transportation engineering, knowledge is power,” Warner Hayman said. “Attending TESC will help me gain a better understanding of the most pressing issues of our industry, such as the impact of connected and automated vehicles, as well as the application of transportation systems management and operations (TSMO) — two areas in which I am currently engaged. I want to share the TESC knowledge and energy with my teams and colleagues at work and through my professional organization involvements.”

Warner Hayman holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis in transportation, from Oregon State University. She earned her Envision Sustainability Professional credential from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure in 2015. She is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and holds volunteer leadership positions with the Institute of Transportation Engineer’s International Board of Direction committees and the Women’s Transportation Seminar of Central Pennsylvania.

The scholarship was established in memory of Adele A. Konefal, a longtime resident of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was employed as a safety traffic manager at various transportation companies in the area.

Since 1995, TESC has attracted professionals from throughout Pennsylvania and across the country. It continues to be an authoritative source of information on pressing issues from some of the foremost experts in transportation today.

The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute is Penn State’s transportation research center. Since its founding in 1968, the Larson Institute has maintained a threefold mission of research, education and service. The institute brings together top faculty, world-class facilities and enterprising students from across the University in partnership with public and private stakeholders to address critical transportation-related problems.
