College of Engineering students show off their projects at Fall 2018 Capstone Design Project Showcase

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After fifteen weeks of hard work, Penn State College of Engineering students displayed their capstone design projects at the Fall 2018 Capstone Design Project Showcase held on December 6 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

A total of 88 capstone design projects, intended to solve real-world challenges posed by industry sponsors and other clients, were judged by a panel of industry experts, comprised of current and past sponsors as well as members of the Learning Factory Industry Advisory Board.

Two projects came in first place for the Lockheed Martin Design Excellence Awards for best project: “Site Inspection Automation” for High Concrete Group LLC (d/b/a StructureCare) by Dante Bizzari, Ryan Dodds, Aaron Safran, Abagail Tarosky, and Garrett Zito, advised by Lennart Bilén, instructor in computer science and engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and “Machining of Wear Resistant Materials Used for Engine Cylinder Liners” for Quaker Chemical Corporation by Timothy Bowean, Bennet Brooks, Sunny Devendran, Aaron Meier, and Adam Osborne, advised by Edward DeMeter, professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering and mechanical and nuclear engineering.

Second place for best project went to “Money Management” for Capital One by Tyler Blankenship, Leah Eckman, Collin Emery, Nihar Gudiseva, Xiang Li, and Lingyu Xu, advised by Al Verbanec, lecturer in computer science and engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and “Redesign of the Capstone Project and Poster Judging System” for the Penn State Learning Factory 1 by Aayush Amin, Harrison Fesel, Castle Leonard, Khari Ross, and Kyle Shindledecker, advised by Al Verbanec, lecturer in computer science and engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Third place best project recipients were “Mobility as a Service Seat Design Optimization” for Ford Motor Company by Miranda Brekke, Jennifer Garrison, Sabria Hoecke, Jessica McNally, and Weiyu Wang, advised by Dave Cannon, associate professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering; and “Design of an adjustable, offset mass golf swing trainer” for SPHERES Consulting, LLC by Adam Bahl, Timothy Chien, Daniel Hingston, and Brady Mason, advised by Ashok Belegundu, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering.

The team to win first place for the best poster award is “Smart Flange for Measuring Temperatures of a Moving Fluid Remotely” for KCF Technologies, Inc. 1 by Ernesto De Lemos Burgana, Muhammad Faisul, Liam Golfin, Nicholas Grieger, Alexandro Herrera, Timothy Smith, Kai Song Tan, William Tang, and Zhenchen Zhu, advised by Donghai Wang, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering and chemical engineering; and second place was awarded to “ThingWorx and the Internet of Things” for PTC Inc. by Amer Bualhasan, Elif Erdogdu, Aman Gola, Matthew Heidelbaugh, and John McGrogan, advised by Lennart Bilén, instructor in computer science and engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and third place went to “Proof of concept: High temperature water leak arrestor” for Corning Incorporated by Logan Althoff, Jason Baldwin, Douglas Crook, Jian Lan, Marcela Velasquez, and David Wasilko, advised by Allen Kimel, associate teaching professor of materials science and engineering in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

The BP People’s Choice Award went to “Banding Machine Setup Improvement (SMED)” for API Technologies by Paul Hammer, Amirul Firdaus Ismail, Kesvin Tan, Jacob Tye, and Wenjing Wu, advised by Sanjay Joshi, professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering.

Jim Gage, Trent Oelkers, Jordan Olivio, and Jesse Sutton from Carlisle Construction received the Best Sponsor Award.
