UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Patrick Fox, the John A. and Harriette K. Shaw Professor and head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State, was recently promoted to president of the Geo-Institute (G-I), one of nine specialty institutes of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Fox completed a one-year term as vice president in October and now assumes the responsibility of leading the organization composed of more than 12,000 individual members in the geo-profession worldwide.

“This appointment is personally very rewarding,” Fox said. “It’s a great honor to serve the Geo-Institute in this capacity.”

Created in 1996, the G-I facilitates the career development and collaboration of members who “work to improve the built environment; prevent the loss of life from natural and human-made hazards; and construct sound and reliable engineered facilities and structures,” according to its website.

Fox has been a member of the G-I since its inception and has served on the board of governors since 2014, including a one-year term as treasurer prior to his appointment as vice president. He said he hopes that his term as president will continue a trend of growth in the organization, including another year of increased attendance at the Geo-Congress, the institute’s annual conference.

“I look forward to working with the other governors in the next year to increase the delivery of technical content to our members, enhance the quality of our regional and national conferences and strengthen the digital footprint of the institute to better serve all members,” Fox said.

The G-I’s overall mission is to enhance career development of its members and promote the geo-profession through various activities, such as their conferences, journals, continuing education, awards, networking and technology transfer programs.
