UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — To champion gender equity in the engineering workforce, Voith Hydro Inc., whose U.S. headquarters are located in York, Pennsylvania, has awarded eight scholarships to undergraduate students in the Penn State Department of Mechanical Engineering.

This year’s recipients are Rachel Deveney, Rebecca Fuhrman, Lauren Katch, Kayli Rentzel, Shohini Banerjee, Caroline Sinz, Lucy Spicher and Carolyn Spotts, who have each been awarded $3,125.

Voith, which has a rich heritage in central Pennsylvania, tracing its American hydropower manufacturing roots over 140 years, previously pledged $25,000 to the scholarship.

“By investing now in the next generation of engineers, we’re able to sustain the local expertise needed to serve the U.S. hydropower industry,” said Stanley Kocon, president and chief executive officer of the company. “At Voith, our goal is to provide our customers high-value technology through fresh innovations and diverse collaboration.”

Eligibility requirements include enrollment at Penn State’s University Park campus, participation in the Women in Engineering Program and studies focused in mechanical engineering. Students that apply also must maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

“This scholarship recognizes and supports extremely high caliber students who we expect will achieve great things in their careers,” said Karen Thole, distinguished professor and mechanical engineering department head. “We also would like to thank Voith for their support!”
