Books

            Heat Pumps / HVAC Applications

Commercial/Institutional Ground-Source Heat Pump Engineering Manual, The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc; 1995

This book is a very detailed design guide for ground-source heat pumps.  It details site requirements, the different types of GSHP systems, system design, and system installation.  It is published by ASHRAE, which is the organization that governs many standards for HVAC and Heat Pump design.

Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings, 9th edition; Benjamin Stein and John S. Reynolds.  John Wiley & Sons, Inc; 2000

This book is a text that we have used in numerous classes, and has just about everything pertaining to mechanical and electrical systems for buildings.  It has 10 pages regarding heat pumps, and about 50 pages on day lighting.

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning, Analysis and Design, 5th edition; Faye C. McQuiston, Jerald D. Parker, Jeffery D. Spitler.  John Wiley & Sons, Inc; 2000

Again, a text that we’ve used in numerous classes; it has a couple pages dedicated to heat pump systems, but it has numerous good rules of design for the entire HVAC system throughout the book.

ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals; The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc; 2001

ASHRAE publishes a 4-year rotating handbook series that sets standards and guidelines for HVAC systems.  These four volumes are Fundamentals, Systems, Applications, and Refrigeration.

ASHRAE Handbook of Systems; The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc; 2000

ASHRAE Handbook of Applications; The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc; 2003

Ground Water for Air-Conditioning in Pittsburgh; D. W. Van Tuyl; Topographical and Geological Survey, Bulletin W. O., 1961

This publication is a good reference to designing heat-pump systems in Pittsburgh.  It speaks of the water temperatures of the ground water, and river water around the area in which the Heinz Facility sits.

Daylighting

Daylighting; Performance and Design, 2nd edition; Gregg D. Ander.  John Wiley & Sons, Inc; 2003

This book is all about the need for, and implications of Daylighting in buildings.  It was recommended to me by Dr. Moses Ling.

            Steel Design

American Institute of Steel Construction, Manual of Steel Construction, 3rd Edition, American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc., 2001

A manual for steel construction and connections under the Load and Resistance Factor Design method.
