Abstract
COSI is
among the country’s most highly respected science centers and is conveniently
located on the west bank of the Scioto
River at 333
West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. COSI features interactive, discovery-based
and themed exhibit areas, an Extreme Screen theater, and the outdoor Big Science Park.
Internationally acclaimed architect Arata Isozaki combined the past with
the future in an innovative design by combining a historical building with a
new structure to form the new COSI. The
new 230,000 square foot building, featuring an innovatively curved precast
concrete exterior is joined with an existing 90,000 square foot Central High School
to form 320,000 square feet of space.
The existing high school was created from hand-laid brick while the new
structure offers high-tech, precision made, precast concrete. The spacious glass atrium represents a joining
of the two styles and a transition between the two architectural forms. With its abundant about of skylights and
themed exhibit areas, this will make for a very interesting and unique building
to analyze and redesign the lighting systems.
