29 September 2008 - TECHNICAL REPORT 1: Structural Concepts/Structural Existing Conditions Report

The Structural Concepts/Structural Existing Conditions Report (Tech Report 1) is an overview of the current design for the Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven, CT. As a preliminary study of the building, Tech Report 1 contains a general description of the hospital’s structural system. Two of the major lateral loads on the structure—wind and seismic—are calculated according to the 2005 version of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Standard for Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. The calculated values are then compared with any available load information from the construction documents. Also, a simplified spot-check for typical structural members is included in the report.

24 October 2008 - TECHNICAL REPORT 2: Pro-Con Structural Study of Alternate Floor Systems

The Pro-con Structural Study of Alternate Floor Systems Report (Tech Report 2) is an analysis/design and discussion of the existing floor system of Smilow Cancer Center as well as three possible alternate systems. The composite slab on metal deck and steel framing system in the current design is analyzed for strength (i.e. bending, shear) and serviceability/practicality (i.e. deflection, vibration, fire rating, etc.). In addition, three other floor systems are designed and analyzed for the criteria mentioned previously. The pros and cons of each floor system are then weighed against each other to get an idea of which would be a viable option in considering an alternate overall structural system for future reports/proposal.

21 November 2008 - TECHNICAL REPORT 3: Lateral System Analysis and Confirmation Design

The Lateral System Analysis and Confirmation Design Report (Tech Report 3) is a study of the lateral resisting system of Smilow Cancer Center. Components of the building’s structure which resist lateral loads such as wind and seismic are analyzed for strength and serviceability issues. These include concerns like strength of critical members, story drift and displacement, overturning moments, and impacts on the structure’s foundation. This report refers to load values calculated for Tech Report 1 and determines their distribution to each lateral system element. Appropriate load cases and combinations are also considered. Note that Tech Report 3 does not consider gravity loads on any component of the lateral resisting system (with the exception of any computer models which may account for dead loads on elements).
