AE 481W/482 Course Reflection

Upon beginning my thesis work this fall, I was not sure what was going happen. The project was canceled and I was very nervous how it would turn out. Would I have enough of a project and a story to tell for my senior thesis. Over the summer I spent a great number of hours working on the project before it was cancelled. It made me very interested and involved in the project. I was really looking forward to working on and starting up the project. It would have been an experience of a lifetime. However that was not to happen. Instead the project was cancelled and I was left to decide what was going to happen with my thesis in the fall.

Once I got back to school in the fall, I had a decision to make about if I would continue on with the project or find another project. I decided to continue on with the canceled project. This lead to a lot of challenges in the fall while creating the technical reports because I had little construction information available. I spent a lot of hours in the fall generating information that was never created for the project. Other may have had the information already created for them. On the other hand, this gave me the chance to lead a lot more about the project and really helped me fall in love with what I was doing.

When writing my proposal there were a lot of items that I wanted to include in my project. I had dreams of greatness for the project. I had four different areas all of which were very thorough. Upon speaking with the professors in the architectural engineering department, all of which were a great help, I decided to trim down my thesis some and focus on telling the story of Kimberton Elementary. Maybe the mistakes and misfortunes of the Phoenixville Area School District can help out more people. The transition to a new site was a great analysis for my thesis. When conducting my research I found that it was a lot of trial and error and I had to speak to number of different individuals to complete it. To all of these individuals I am in debt. I tried to complete all of my research before spring break. I almost completed this task and after spring break I was able to jump into writing my report and preparing my presentation. This was done bit by bit day by day with me filling in the missing details as necessary. When then completed what I thought was a decent thesis and presentation but nothing that I thought was spectacular.

After presenting what my thesis to the best of my ability, I was relived that it was over. However the next day, I was told that I was finalist. This actually came as a surprise to me. I am proud to represent my option in the finals next week. I look forward to the chance to bring best overall home to the construction managers.

Additionally I learned a lot over the last year. Despite being difficult at times, it was not quite as challenging as I anticipated. I know that the knowledge and work ethic that I developed over the past year will serve me well over the next years.

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection

The CPEP is a great way to share the information obtained during thesis research. I think that it is important to share this information for many reasons. It was useful when getting information to professors, industry and potential employers. It was also a valuable for organizing information.

The discussion board is a great resource for getting knowledge from experts in our field. I did not use the board but once and only got one response from it. It happened to be someone that I was already in contact with. This is not the case for most people. I have heard and seen that a great number of students getting reponses very quickly to their questions and gained alot of knowledge from the discussion board.
