In
Their Own Words (ITOW) is an interactive workshop for
engineering faculty that aims to improve the learning
environment by identifying and addressing
"underground" climate and diversity issues.
The ITOW goal is to engender discussion on the
importance of diversity in teaching and learning for
all students; on the distinction between a learning
and a teaching environment; on faculty
responsibilities that go beyond the delivery of
material; on how behavior change can bring about a
more equitable learning environment; and what
departments can do.
The
ITOW video (viewable in digital format on this CD) and the
workshop materials, used together are designed to:
-
Explore
the value of diversity defined broadly to include
learning preferences, socioeconomic
background in addition to race, ethnicity,
and gender in teaching and learning for all
students
-
Discuss
whether faculty responsibilities go beyond the
delivery of material in the classroom
-
Identify
teaching and learning strategies and/or changes
that can create a more equitable learning
environment for all students and faculty
-
Facilitate
faculty and departmental ownership of these issues
- Initiate department activities related to the
learning environment.
ITOW
has been facilitated at departmental meetings, new
faculty workshops, intercollegiate sessions, climate
committee sessions, and graduate teaching assistant
training sessions at a variety of institutions. |
