STUDENT BIO

Derek Bauer is currently in his fifth year of study in the Architectural Engineering program at The Pennsylvania State University.  His area of concentration is in the Construction Management option.  Derek is working towards an integrated Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering (B.A.E./M.A.E.) degree, and plans to graduate in May of 2008.  After graduation, he will assume Engineer In Training (EIT) status since he successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.

For the past three summers, Derek has gained valuable experience in the construction industry by taking advantage of several internship opportunities.  He worked for Wohlsen Construction out of their Lancaster, PA office for two summers, where he primarily worked in the estimating departments for both public and private work.  Although Derek’s primary interest is managing construction projects in the field, he gained priceless knowledge and experience in the preconstruction side of “getting the work”.  In the summer of 2007, he ventured for a change of scenery and accepted an internship with Balfour Beatty Construction in Washington, D.C. as a project engineer.  Derek was placed on a downtown jobsite where he experienced how things are documented and managed in the field, or “doing the work”.  Since the construction industry relies very heavily on experience, he is glad to have several summers of internships under his belt and to prepare him for his career.

During his time at Penn State, Derek has been involved with several organizations and has taken on leadership roles within them.  He enjoys being an active part of The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), which serves as the world’s largest student-run philanthropy and benefits the Four Diamonds Fund for kids with cancer.  This year Derek is a Special Events captain in charge of the logistical planning of several THON events, and also helps lead a committee of 20 student volunteers.  He serves as the THON chair for the Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE) where he is mainly in charge of the organization’s fundraising.  Derek is an active member in SSAE, also known as AEI, as well as the Partnership for Achieving Construction Excellence, Student Chapter (S:PACE).  For a portion of the summer of 2006, he traveled to Rome, Italy for a study abroad program in architecture.  He also enjoys playing various intramural sports and was involved with club golf for three years of his college life.
