Student Biography

Leland Curtis is currently in his 5th year of the Architectural Engineering program at Penn State. He plans to graduate this spring with an integrated Bachelor/Master of Architectural Engineering with a focus in lighting design. He spent his first four semesters at Penn State studying architectural design in the College of Arts and Architecture and will graduate with a Minor in Architectural Studies.

Leland currently works part-time for the Office of Physical Plant at Penn State analyzing energy-saving lighting retrofits for existing campus buildings. This past summer he interned at the lighting design firm Schuler Shook, where he gained valuable experience in the schematic design, design development and construction administration phases of the lighting design process. During the summer of 2009 and continuing through the following academic year, Leland worked as a lighting design intern for Smithgroup Inc. in Detroit, where he performed daylighting analysis, schematic design presentations and energy calculations for a variety of different project types. He will return to Smithgroup to work as a full-time lighting designer starting this summer.

When not working or in class, Leland participates in professional and student organizations through his roles as Vice President of the Penn State Student Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and Marketing Director for the Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE). He pursues his musical interests by writing and recording original songs with his twin brother. Over the years Leland has participated in various outdoor activities including leading canoe trips and facilitating a high ropes course.
