Student Biography

Zachary Heilman is currently in his 5th year of study in the Architectural Engineering Program at Penn State University. In May 2011, he will graduate with an Integrated Bachelor/Master of Architectural Engineering degree, with a focus in mechanical systems. Zachary is a student member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

During the past 4 summers, Zachary has participated in mechanical engineering internships including Jacobs Engineering, a globally recognized AE design build firm, as well as an internship with Aramark Technical Services. Aramark is a mechanical engineering consultant concentrating in the energy management of new and existing buildings for higher-education clients. He spent a summer managing architectural and engineering projects with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Zachary has also interned with Robert D. Lynn Associates an AE firm, where he has developed proficient drafting skills. These experiences provided him with valuable experience and insight into the design, coordination, and construction of a variety of building types.

Zachary passed the Fundamentals Engineering (FE) Exam in April 2010 and will gain Engineering in Training (EIT) status upon graduation. In the short term, he looks forward to beginning work as mechanical engineer for a consulting or AE firm to gain knowledge and practical experience in the mechanical engineering profession and to obtain his license as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Outside of academics, Zachary is involved in University activities. He spent 3 years working part-time with AE Department in the controls lab. As a 5th year senior, he is now working with his building controls professor to fabricate a building control system. Zachary enjoys outside activities including fishing, fitness, and many other outdoor sports.
