Amanda Gerstenberg's Bio

Amanda will be graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in May 2006 with both a Bachelor's and Master's in the structural option of Architectural Engineering as well as a minor in Engineering Leadership Development. Amanda passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam in April 2005 and will be pursuing her Professional Engineering License upon graduation.

Her two most significant internships were with Trus Joist - first in Charlotte, NC and second in Sacramento, CA. While in Charlotte, Amanda worked mostly with tall walls. She designed any wall (including columns, headers, and studs ) over 11 feet which came into the office. While at this office, Amanda was named July Technical Associate of the Month for a re-write of a program with a co-worker which extensively compared and contrasted floor systems. To broaden her background and professional development, Amanda then decided to accept a placement in Sacramento, CA. While in Sacramento, Amanda dealt more with customer relations through taking technical calls and specifying repairs or supporting calculations for damaged joists. She enjoys the residential design she experienced with Trus Joist and hopes to continue in the structural residential engineering field.

Outside of classes, Amanda works at the University Learning Centers as a math tutor and coordinator. The coordinator position allows her to lead monthly meetings to discuss performance and problems as well as supervise the other 30 employees of the University Learning Centers. She also is a personal assistant to a professor in the College of Education and Information, Science, and Technology. Through this position, she will also be participating in a study of design and design pedagogy across domains such as engineering, architecture, instructional design, and interface design. Lastly, Amanda shares her passion of Engineering through her position as a Resident Assistant for a First Year Science and Engineering dorm floor. Through this position, she spends her time enforcing university policies and responding to occurances on a regular basis as well as coordinating social and educational activities for her floor of 43 students.
