AE 481/ AE 482W Course Reflection

AE 481W is offered the fall semester as the first part of the senior thesis capstone course. This course helps students to become familiar with their building project. For example, as a CM option we were required to write three technical reports which consisted of information about our building’s systems components, site plan layout, client information, project delivery method, project cost, and schedule amongst other things. Researching the projects background and discussing construction industry issues at the PACE roundtable helped me in determining the problematic areas that could be evaluated for my thesis proposal. During the semester there were very few scheduled in class meetings which allowed me to work on my research at my own pace. I also took a few trips to my project site in Southeast Pennsylvania and spoke to a few industry members to get some insight on some of the issues faced during construction.

AE 482 is offered the spring semester as the second part of senior thesis and it began on January 14. This semester focused on evaluating several aspects of my building project that may potentially reduce cost and accelerate the project schedule. I was able to apply the knowledge obtained in the past five years to develop my analyses in the mechanical and electrical field. At first, the course work was overwhelming especially since there were only two deadlines, so time management was key to the success of this aspect of the project. Submission of the final report and final presentation took place in early April. I learned to pace myself throughout the semester to meet the deadlines.

Overall, the senior thesis capstone course provided me with challenges and experiences that I believe has made me a well rounded engineer and I am confident the knowledge I have obtained at Penn State will be carried and applied in my future engineering career.

CPEP Reflection

The Capstone Project Electronic Portfolio (CPEP) is a web-based project and information center that allowed us to post our senior thesis work throughout the semester. The site was to be maintained as new material was gathered from researching our building project. The CPEP was a great way of communicating my research work with family, friends, faculty, industry members and other students. The site was a great resource during my research, for example, it is a great reference tool and the message/discussion board provided answers to difficult questions in an efficient manner for all options. One of the challenges I faced with using the site was with providing coherent information, that anyone with engineering knowledge, would be able to understand. Now that I have completed my research I am able to review and update my work. It was a rewarding experience.
