Structural Option

This is a student-generated Capstone Project e-Portfolio (CPEP) produced in conjuction with the AE Senior Thesis e-Studio.

User Note:

While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of Philip Frederick. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design.

Technical Assignments

Technical Assignment 1

Technical Assignment 1 is a detailed report of the existing conditions and structural systems at Swedish American Hospital's Heart and Vascular Center. Detailed calculations of wind and seismic loads were performed and a preliminary analysis of the gravity and lateral systems was completed.

Technical Assignment 2

Technical Assignment 2 is a preliminary analysis of possible framing systems. Schematic designs and rough calculations are completed for each of 4 alternative framing systems then are compared to the existing framing system. From this comparison, it is determined whether or not one or two of the framing systems is a feasible option for the structure. The systems analyzed in this report are:
1.) Existing Composite Steel Framing
2.) Alternative Composite Steel Framing
3.) One Way Slab with Beams
4.) Two Way Post Tensioned Slab
5.) Girder Slab System

Technical Assignment 3

Technical Assignment 3 is a detailed analysis of the lateral framing system and its response to lateral loadings from wind and seismic forces. An ETABS model was used to analyze the lateral framing and results from the program were compared to rough hand calculations to confirm the output.
