User Note:
- While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of David Geiger. Changes and descrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore investigation results may vary from the original design.

Technical Assignments

Structural Technical Report I
This report was conducted to analyze the existing conditions of the structure and become familiar with the structural systems of the building. Within the report you can find descriptions of these systems, material strengths, and a summary of building codes used for this report and at the onset of the project. A preliminary analysis of the wind and seismic loads was also completed to begin to understand how the building takes on lateral loads. Spot checks on certain building components were also made to figure out original design methods.

Structural Technical Report II
This report was conducted to analyze the existing floor framing system while also analyzing and designing three other possible alternatives. A typical bay of each framing system was designed and analyzed. Once this had been completed, an evaluation of each system was conducted using certain criterion to determine the most feasible alternative system(s) for Dulles Town Center Building One. The following floor systems were included in this report:

  • Post-Tension Beam and One-Way Slab (Existing)
  • Composite Metal Deck
  • Flat Slab with Drop Panels
  • Hollow Core Plank

Structural Technical Report III
This report further analyzed the concrete moment frame resisting system of Dulles Town Center Building One. Relative stiffnesses were found using computer analysis to determine lateral load distribution. The lateral loads came from direct and torsion effects which were then applied to the moment frames and analyzed using portal frame analysis. Member checks were made to verify capacity for lateral and gravity loads and a serviceability check was also performed and results were compared to code parameters.
