Structural

The main structure of the building consists of structural steel columns, beams, decks and concrete slab. The foundation for this project consist of spread footing, basement and foundation walls, and 6” slabs on grade with 6x6 W2.9xW2.9 welded wire fabric, allowable bearing pressure is 4 tons per square foot.

The elevated portion of the structure consists of 3 ¼” lightweight concrete with welded wire fabric6x6-W2.9xW2.9 on 3” deep, 20 gage composite steel deck with a total thickness of 6 ¼”. Typical office floor beam size is W18x35 on the east and west bays and W18x65 on the center bay.Typical girder size is W16x26. These girders are supported by steel columns of various dimensions ranging from W8x28 to W8x67 and W10x60 to W10x6. The baseplate for steel columns have sizes range from 9x10 ½ x ¾ to 12x12x1 ¾.

The lateral force resisting system of the EMS Serono Research Center is a combination of diagonally braced frames and moment resisting connectio
