derek Stoecklein | Construction management option | 2012-2013

Upon graduating in May 2013, Derek received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering (B.A.E) with a concentration in Construction Management and began work as an Office Engineer with Gilbane Building Company. Through the five years Derek has attended Penn State, he become extremely involved in philanthropic and education organizations. Additionally, he has a held leadership positions in several organizations such as, the President of Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) and Executive THON (Penn State Philanthropic Organization) chair of The Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE). As a member and leader of DBIA, he was able to join the DBIA competition team and compete in the ASC Regional Competition (Placed first overall), as well as the DBIA National Student Competition (Placed first in Mid-Atlantic Region). While Thon chair, Derek was able to helped SSAE raise over $10,000 to help kids fight cancer.

Derek started his construction management experience during the summer of 2011, as an intern with Clark Builders Group in the D.C. Metro Region. During his summer with CBG, he learned how to manage trade contractors through man power reports and tracking schedules. With Clark being a General Contractor, performing some of their own work, Derek was able to develop practical construction experience through hands-on activities.

Most recently, Derek has completed another construction management internship with Gilbane Building Company, working on a sports arena at Towson University. During his summer with Gilbane, he managed and negotiated change orders, updated drawings, assisted in procurement of a $50M Business management complex at Morgan State University, reviewed submittals, and managed the projects LEED Data. Derek has used these past internships and his Penn State education to build a foundation that he plans to work of, and grow from as he moves towards the construction management industry upon graduation.
