User Note:

Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of Casey Mowery. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design.

AE 481W & AE 482

The first semester of senior thesis was made up of AE 481W. This class focused on technical assignments which familiarized me with my building's system components, structure, construction, site, existing conditions, and project constraints. Much of this class encouraged students to utilize plans, specifications, and reference books and manuals. By the end of AE 481W, I feel that I knew almost everything there was to know about the WCA's design and construction. I gained a more working knowledge of plans, specs, and communicating with actual team members working on the project. This semester forced me to work closely with the WCA team and determine which aspects of the building could be improved upon for the following semester, AE 482.

AE 482 made up the second semester of thesis. This class was much more work intensive and functioned on a much more individualized level. There were less group meetings and progress checks than in AE 481W, which I personally preferred because it increased my level of responsibility and allowed me to work at my own pace. Therefore, this class really helped to reinforce the necessity of proper time management and self-discipline. The focus of this class was to encourage students to use their knowledge of their own option as well as two other AE disciplines and create a senior thesis. I drew upon knowledge I gained over the last five years. At least three potential building improvements were proposed, researched, designed, and evaluated for their effectiveness. This class inspired me to contact industry member's through surveys and interviews. It also allowed me to strengthen my skills in other disciplines, especially lighting/electrical and mechanical. Overall, I leave this class with a gained sense of accomplishment, increased techncial skills and knowledge, and valuable industry contacts and relationships.

CPEP

The Capstone e-Portfolio served to be very helpful throughout my senior thesis work. At the beginning of AE 481W, it was difficult and time consuming to get the e-Portfolio functioning properly because I was not experienced with designing or creating web pages. Two semesters later, I am much more comfortable with the entire process. The CPEP was a great way to keep the WCA project team up-to-date on my progress without having to send them individual emails with attachments. It also served as a means for my family, friends, potential employers, and professors to see what I had been working on. By posting my work, it kept everything organized and professional. Now that senior thesis is drawing to an end, I am glad that I will have an electronic version to refer back to and show employers in the future.
