Research on a Critical Industry Issue

Consequences of the English-Spanish Language Barrier in the Construction Industry

As part of senior thesis, construction management students are encouraged to research a critical issue that currently faces the construction industry. I have chosen to conduct research on the leading consequences of the English-Spanish language barrier in the construction industry. To focus my research, I am interested in surveying people who have worked in the construction industry for at least three years and are located in the north eastern and mid atlantic United States.

Your assistance in my research would be greatly appreciated. I have created a simple one page survey which should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete. I am trying to obtain as many responses as possible in order to have a statistically acceptable sample size. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if participants would encourage their co-workers to take the survey as well.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me with my senior thesis. All responses from the survey will be kept confidential.

There are 3 links below; all direct you to the same survey (just in different formats). Please choose the format that is best for you.

Helpful Resources for Senior Thesis

The Collaborative for High Performance Schools is a great tool for anyone who is looking to change the aspects of a school environment to either more sustainable or LEED rated. The web site is: http://www.chps.net/overview/index.htm

The Electronic Library of Construction Occupational Safety and Health (eLCOSH) is valuable for construction management students, specifically those researching safety information. I used this source to research the injury and fatality rates of Spanish speaking workers versus English speaking workers. The web site is: http://www.cdc.gov/eLCOSH/

Energy Star was extremely helpful in finding ways to help schools reduce energy consumption and save money. The web site is: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=k12_schools.bus_schoolsk12

I recommend anyone who is looking into teaching Spanish to English speaking people that they reference Interlingo. This innovative program may be the wave of the future in universities with construction programs. The web site is: http://www.interlingospanish.com/index-3.html

This source is great for green schools, whether LEED certified or simply looking to make them more sustainable. The web site is: http://www.gggc.state.pa.us/gggc

The U.S. Department of Energy also provided valuable information for sustainable schools. The web site is: http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings
