RYAN JOHNSON

Ryan Johnson is currently a 5th year architectural engineering student at The Pennsylvania State University. He is actively pursuing the integrated BAE/MAE degree, specializing in the structural systems option. He plans to graduate in May 2010 with EIT status and gain employment at a structural engineering firm allowing him to further his knowledge in the engineering field.

This past summer, Ryan was an intern at Structura, in Rockville, MD, where he gained valuable experience by utilizing various design programs and traveling on numerous site visits. Ryan worked closely with engineers analyzing both existing and new structural conditions. Ryan spent the preceding summer participating in the undergraduate study abroad program in Rome, Italy, allowing him to gain an architectural studies minor and an invaluable world experience.  He has also worked for Hughe’s Engineering in Clearfield, PA and for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a construction inspector intern.

Before enrolling at Penn State, Ryan attended Clearfield Area High School. There he participated in many extracurricular activities: soccer, football, basketball, baseball, track and Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout Award. His ability to balance academics and other activities has helped him in his college career. While at Penn State, Ryan has been involved with various intramural sports and philanthropy groups such as Habitat for Humanity and Penn State Dance Marathon.  As part of Habitat for Humanity, Ryan has taken part in leadership roles on spring break service trips to Bunnell, FL and New Orleans, LA. For the past five semesters he has also worked as a teaching assistant for the sophomore-level working drawings course.

All of these experiences have shaped his understanding of teamwork, people, and the challenges that are encompassed in the design of buildings.
