Dean's Community Message

April 20, 2020

Dear College of Engineering Community,

Today marks two weeks left of classes. This time is not what we imagined when we parted for spring break, but I continue to be impressed by how students, faculty and staff have adapted to the changes. I recognize that these weeks and the ones following are especially bittersweet for our graduating students. While we will do our best to celebrate your accomplishments from afar, there is no comparable stand-in for the May commencement you have earned. Please know that we will host an in-person celebration as soon as is permissible.

That brings me to today’s quote submitted by Kerrick Johnstonbaugh, a senior in biomedical engineering:

“‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”
—Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring

I encourage you to hold your heads high. This may not be what you thought it would be, but do not let it lessen your accomplishments. You have done excellent work and you should be proud as you move forward.

Today’s updates:

Virtual Commencement Details

Penn State launched a virtual commencement website, where more details will be posted as they become available.

Events Canceled Through June 19

To align with the University’s decision to cancel all in-person summer camp programs through June 19, Penn State also announced that all nonessential events and meetings will be canceled, rescheduled or moved virtually through at least June 19.

Student Support Funds

Last week, Penn State announced that the University will receive nearly $55 million from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, with $27.5 million earmarked for emergency financial aid grants for Penn State students. Details on how students can apply for the emergency aid will be shared broadly as soon as they are available.

Updated Public Health Guidelines

The Pennsylvania Department of Health issued new guidelines to include the mandatory use of face coverings in public, as well as maintaining a six-foot distance between others and frequent hand washing.

Please continue to email me your “Because I couldn’t …” and your inspirational quotes. Penn State updates are available on the University’s coronavirus information site.
