Program Director – Graduate Program in Acoustics

The Penn State College of Engineering invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Graduate Program in Acoustics. The program has a 55-year history of excellence in acoustics and seeks an individual who will provide innovative and energetic leadership for the future, with a focus on diversity. The successful candidate must have academic credentials commensurate with the rank of professor with tenure; a strong record of and commitment to teaching, research, and service in acoustics; proven administrative skills; and a widely recognized reputation in acoustics.

The program is internationally recognized as a leading academic program dedicated to acoustics, and is known for the quality of its students, its research and educational programs, and leadership of the profession. It is the only civilian Ph.D.-granting acoustics program in the nation, with over 800 masters and doctoral degrees granted since its inception. Additional information is available at

Current research and teaching activities include core topics such as biomedical ultrasound, acoustic functional materials, aero- and hydro-acoustics, structural acoustics, architectural acoustics, transducers and signal processing, underwater acoustics, and physical acoustics. The breadth of acoustics as a discipline is relevant to every department in the College of Engineering ( and across the university. The program is also a strategic partner with the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory ( and maintains close connections with industry through the Center for Acoustics and Vibration (

The program’s faculty consists of 6 core faculty and over 35 affiliated faculty members from other academic departments and the Applied Research Laboratory and is supported by 4 dedicated staff. The program offers more than 20 acoustics courses on a wide variety of topics. Approximately 50 students are currently enrolled in Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs in Acoustics at the University Park campus. In addition, the program offers the M.Eng. in Acoustics degree through a distance learning option in coordination with the Penn State World Campus; approximately 100 Distance Education students enroll in our courses each semester. As part of the first phase of the College’s capital construction master plan, the program is scheduled to move into new office and research facilities by 2024.

The Graduate Program in Acoustics Director position is a tenured faculty position. Half time is devoted to teaching, research, and service typical of a senior tenured faculty. The other half time administrative responsibilities include working strategically and collaboratively across the College and University to recruit diverse graduate students and faculty, secure resources to support program initiatives, supervise faculty (core and affiliated) and staff, and plan for future growth (new research areas, students, faculty, and courses). While the program is currently aligned with the Department of Aerospace Engineering for administrative support and oversight, core Acoustics faculty have their primary appointment within the program and the program controls its educational and research activities.
