Assistant Research Professor

The Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) within the College of Engineering has an opening for a Radiochemistry and Neutron Activation Analysis Specialist. The RSEC facilities are expanding recently with the installation of a new core moderator assembly and new beam ports, a cold neutron source and expanded neutron beam hall. The main activities for the selected candidate primarily involve nuclear and radiochemistry laboratory activities in research and teaching, neutron activation analysis for impurity determination in materials, and installation and testing of the prompt gamma activation analysis system at the newly established cold neutron beam-line. A PhD degree in a physical science, or engineering and/or at least 5 years of experience with radiochemistry, chemical separation, neutron activation analysis, nuclear instrumentation, and other nuclear analytical methods are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing stimulating, and supporting research utilizing the RSEC facilities and will be given an appropriate academic work title. The RSEC facilities include the Penn State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR), gamma irradiation facilities (In-pool Irradiator and Dry Irradiator), Neutron Beam Laboratory and Hot Cells, Radionuclear Applications Laboratory with NAA and Compton Suppression system, Radiochemistry Teaching Laboratory, Nuclear Security Education Laboratory, Subcritical Graphite Reactor Facility, and various radiation detection and measurement laboratories.

The RSEC facilities are a regulated drug-free workplace and applicants must a pass drug screening and are subject to random and for-cause testing. The selected applicant must pass an additional federal background investigation and an Environmental Health and Safety radiation worker qualification orientation. Vehicles and personal property may randomly be subject to search upon entering and exiting the facility.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for three years from date of hire with good possibility of re-funding.
