Architectural Engineering Non-Tenure-Line Teaching Professor

Structural Design of Steel and Timber Buildings

The Department of Architectural Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is soliciting applications for two Full-Time, Non-Tenure-Line, Teaching Professor positions in Building Structural Systems. The position could be filled at all ranks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor).

The ideal candidate would be qualified to teach building structural analysis and loading as well as the design of: (1) steel structures and connections and/or (2) mass timber structures and connections in accordance with pertinent industry building codes. Additional experience in architectural engineering materials and systems, methods of building construction, and modeling or industry design software techniques is considered a plus, as opportunities for teaching in those areas are also possible. Successful candidates will adapt active teaching approaches in both small and large class size settings while also advising capstone design projects with collateral departmental service as needed. Responsibilities for advising include capstone projects that use existing buildings and honors student advising, as well as mentoring undergraduate students for career preparation and professional development.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an architectural engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, or related engineering program, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence through academic courses, professional seminars, or other closely related activities. Applicants should be committed to professional growth and promoting equity and inclusion among diverse students and colleagues. Having relevant industry experience in structural design and/or currently holding license as a professional engineer (in any state) are highly valued. Prior teaching experience and any industry or academic awards are also a plus.

The position can be filled immediately. Applications should include cover letter, full curriculum vitae, statement of professional interests addressing the integration of teaching and professional topics, and contact information for three references. Please include your vision and philosophical approach for educating engineering students. Review of applications will begin on October 3rd, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.

The department has a well-earned reputation for world-class education on the theory and practice of engineering analysis, design, and construction of buildings and building systems. The department offers a thesis-driven, 5-year Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree (BAE) with 160 credit hours required for graduation. The BAE degree program unites scientific principles from structural, mechanical, electrical, lighting, acoustical, and construction engineering. The department offers research-oriented graduate degree programs at the Master’s (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels, as well as a coursework-oriented Master of Engineering (MEng) degree program. Students who major in the AE program add value to society by engineering buildings that are sustainable, resilient, economically viable, and high performance – ensuring the safety, health, and productivity of building occupants while complementing the architectural design. In 2023, the College of Engineering will open a world-class full-scale structural engineering laboratory that will offer these positions possibilities for innovative hands-on teaching and demonstrations. More information about the department is available at www.ae.psu.edu.

This position is funded for three years from the date of hire with possibility for renewal.
