Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The britelab in The Pennsylvania State University's Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering is seeking a creative and dynamic non-tenure-line Assistant Research Professor. The britelab is a highly interdisciplinary research lab devoted to bridging research in innovation, technology, and engineering. Current research thrusts focus on the role of emerging technologies in improving efficiencies and reducing human errors across a breadth of disciplines, including healthcare, engineering, construction, and counterterrorism.

The Assistant Research Professor will join a diverse team working across disciplines and help shape research directions for the britelab as a member of their leadership team. The successful candidate will lead research on emerging technology, publish and present their research findings, assist with graduate student advising, and assist with proposal submissions and reports to project sponsors.

Requirements and Qualifications:

The Assistant Research Professor should possess a PhD in a field that is appropriate to support research in engineering design by the appointment start date. Alternatively, the Assistant Research Professor without a terminal degree should possess at least a master's degree, must have demonstrated ability as a researcher, and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline. In addition to traditional engineering concentrations, applicants with a background in human factors, applied or cognitive psychology, human-computer interaction, computer science, built environments, biomedical applications, and other emerging areas are encouraged to apply.

In addition, candidates should have:

  • An ability to work comfortably in interdisciplinary settings.

  • An ability to lead and manage human subjects data collection in a variety of settings with diverse populations.

  • Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) research experience.

  • Experience designing and/or adapting new technologies and techniques.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Evidence of collaborative research skills (communication, team building, conflict resolution).

  • Knowledge of human subject ethics and experience writing Institutional Review Board (IRB) research protocols.

  • Experience with Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced Haptics is a plus.
