Purpose:

The Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship (SGF) offers a unique opportunity for students
seeking a Ph.D. at the University of Kansas. SGF selects students with the attributes that will put
them on track to make a difference in the world and in their professions. Self Graduate Fellows
demonstrate initiative, passion for achievement and devotion to lifelong learning. Specifically,
SGF is looking for high potential individuals who have a clear vision, career goals, leadership
potential, motivation and a strong work ethic.

Eligibility:

U.S. citizens.
must have received their bachelor’s degrees within the last eight years.
Students who are invited to interview must submit proof of U.S. citizenship
prior to the interview.

Terms of Award:

New Self Graduate Fellows for 2022-20223 will receive annual support of $32,000 for four years. Payment is through appointment as a graduate research assistant. The fellowship covers tuition, fees, and the employer's share of student health insurance costs. Over the four years, fellows have access to a $5,500 professional development award. All fellows actively participate in the Fellow Development Program. The total value of the four-year doctoral fellowship exceeds $180,000. The 41 current Self Graduate Fellows are among 209 students who have benefited from the fellowship since it was established in 1989.
