Purpose:

The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) provides a forum for members and partners of the highway industry to promote a safe, efficient and sustainable highway system through education, innovation and fellowship. The Delaware Valley Section has for many years sponsored scholarships to undergraduate civil engineering students who attend college or reside within the Section’s coverage area.

The Robert Shaw Memorial Scholarship Program was established in memory of Mr. Shaw, who showed great commitment to the practice of Civil Engineering, to grow the base of the civil engineering community at the university level as well as to reward civil engineering students for their outstanding efforts. This year, the Robert Shaw Memorial Scholarship Program anticipates distributing several thousand dollars raised through donations from members of the local engineering community and the family and friends of Mr. Shaw. This money will be distributed to eligible students who have excelled both inside and outside of the classroom.

Eligibility:

a. The applicant must be a citizen of the United States or have permanent resident status.
b. The applicant must be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in the fall in, a four-year college program leading to a bachelor’s degree in a program related to the Highway Design and Construction industry, preferably civil engineering.
c. The following criteria must be met:
i. Permanent resident of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Philadelphia, or Montgomery Counties
ii. Enrolled in, or accepted to, Penn State University
d. College students must submit their most recent college transcripts, unofficial copies are acceptable, including grades for the most recent semester completed. Applicants in their first semester must submit copies of SAT scores and high school transcripts.

Terms of Award:

Several Thousand Dollars in scholarship funds are expected to be distributed with a minimum award of $500 to the successful applicants

Candidates that are selected to receive a scholarship may be invited for an interview with the selection committee to determine the amount of the scholarship.
