Dean's Community Message

March 18, 2020

Dear College of Engineering Community,

Penn State announced today the extension of the University’s remote delivery period for all classes through at least the spring semester. Examinations will be administered remotely and spring commencement ceremonies will be postposed while options to celebrate the achievements of graduating students are explored. These decisions were based on evolving federal guidance and statewide mitigation plans announced by Gov. Tom Wolf around the growing coronavirus pandemic and the global efforts underway to stop its spread.

In this challenging time, I encourage you to stay connected virtually. Check in on friends, colleagues, family, and others using Zoom or other computer-based methods. If you are feeling isolated, reach out with a call, an email, or a text.

Here are some additional updates for today.

Issues We’re Working to Clarify/Address

We have received numerous inquiries from students concerned that the challenges they are experiencing this semester might interfere with their ability to meet published entrance-to-major requirements (GPA and credit window). Additional questions are being raised about yesterday’s faculty senate resolution related to Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade options and Spring 2020 academic standing impacts. Please know that we are working diligently to investigate these questions and evaluate a variety of scenarios to identify options that are in the best interest of students, the college, and the University.

Call for Challenges and Solutions

Two online forms have been created to collect input from College of Engineering students and faculty about remote instruction experiences. An additional form is being created and will be shared soon to collect feedback from college staff on issues related to teleworking. Please share your perspectives. Common challenges and solutions will be posted to the Office for Digital Learning Contingency Planning website.

IT Support: Faculty/Staff

For employees dealing with technical challenges related to telework, the college’s Networking, Computing, and Training team is available to offer support remotely. Email support@engr.psu.edu or connect with your departmental-specific IT contacts.

Telework Ergonomics

Penn State’s Learning Resource Network offers a virtual module on workplace ergonomics. Learn how you can create a healthy work environment and how to adjust your setup to avoid common injuries.

Leaders within the college continue to work together to address questions and concerns related to this rapidly changing situation. If you have unanswered questions, please email L-COE_CORONA_CRISIS_TEAM@engr.psu.edu and continue to refer to the University’s informational site and the College of Engineering resources site, which features an archive of these daily messages.

To everyone in our community near and far, please stay safe and healthy!
