Dean's Community Message

April 12, 2020

Dear College of Engineering Community,

Today, while overcast, is the warmest we’ve had in a few days. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it before the week turns rainy. I know it can be hard to stay home, and it can be just as difficult to get up and out (social distanced, of course) — I just look at my two dogs: one is always ready for a walk, while the other would rather enjoy the sun through a window while she stays in bed. Either way, I hope you have a pleasant day spent how you wish.

That leads to today’s inspirational quote, which was submitted twice: once by Emma Wess, an undergraduate student majoring in civil engineering, and once by Danielle Snyder, administrative support coordinator in nuclear engineering:

“When you can’t control what’s happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what’s happening. That’s where your power is.”

My first response is to connect with people, however I can. Please join me by connecting on LinkedIn, or take a moment to acknowledge the work of your colleagues in engineering. My other responses appear contradictory in nature but are both, I assure you, equally helpful. One is to exercise, and the other is to eat too much pizza. How are you responding? What are you doing for you? For others? Email me to share.

Remember to follow the college on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. And keep up to date on the latest Penn State developments via the University’s Coronavirus Information Site.

Take care!

Justin Schwartz
