Dean's Community Message

Feb. 9, 2020

Dear College of Engineering Community,

The pace of modern life and the constant demands on our time and attention can make it seem next to impossible to pause and unplug. But we know that taking time to nurture our personal health and wellbeing is absolutely critical, not just during a time of global anxiety and uncertainty, but at all times.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
—Author Anne Lamott

As you know, today is the first of three wellness days this spring semester. With that in mind, I am going to save my typical list of updates for the community message on Friday. Instead, I simply want to encourage every member of our engineering community to consider and engage today in your personal wellness. Today’s theme is financial and occupational wellness, and there are a variety virtual programming opportunities available for students, faculty, and staff.

Beyond these, there are countless other ways to nurture your personal wellbeing. Studies show that activities like a brief walk around the block, a few minutes for meditation, a conversation with a friend, or a short workout can make a world of difference. I invite you to discover what works for you and to make it a habit not just today but every day.

Take care of yourself and be well!
